There are a lot of dangers in smoking and drug abuse. First of all, smoking lessens your life span and increases your chances at getting various diseases. Drug abuse can lead to your death and also put more risks on your overall health. Both are addictive. When the author says that drug abuse "damages people's body and mind" he means that your health, therefore your body is affected by drug abuse and also the mind.
